This is one a kind 1938 Studebaker Coupe Express.
It was specially ordered for a funeral home in Christchurch New Zealand from
the Studebaker Corporation in South Bend Indiana. It was delivered as
a cab and chassis. The body was fitted and used as a flower car and
casket hauler until 1958. The vehicle was then sold to a water sports
enthusiast/"surfer", for several years, and then disassembled and stored.
Ten years later it was purchased by a Studebaker Club member and restored to
pristine condition with the addition of hardwood teak like wood bed
(Macaocarpa).
The Studebaker Coupe Express was a pickup truck,
produced by the Studebaker Corporation of South Bend, Indiana between 1937
and 1940. The coupe express was unique at that time because Studebaker's
passenger car styling was mated to a full size truck bed.
The Coupe Express was created by using the Studebaker Dictator passenger car
frame, running gear, and front sheet metal. A new body stamping was made to
form the cab back. An all steel pickup box was built for the pickup models.
The model was sold as a cab and chassis, with rear fenders attached, so a
service box could be fabricated by the end user (such as a plumber, or depot
hack).
